Broad Banded Water Snake

April 16, 2005- Stoddard County, Missouri

This was one of the species that I most wanted to find while in Missouri in the spring of 2005.  Our time was growing short, and we were just exiting the swamp where this snake is found.  I was sort of dissapointed that we were unable to find it, when I spotted a small snake slithering across the road in front of us.  I dashed out of the car.  I could tell that it was not venomous, so I grabbed the mystery serpent just as it exited the road.  When my eyes finally focused on the snake, I was very pleased to see that I had a juvenile confluens in my hand.
