Yellowbelly Water Snake

April 19, 2001- Union Co. IL

Most species in the genus Nerodia will readily bite when handled.  This species is no exception.  The thing about Yellowbellies is they seem to smell worse than other water snakes. (In my opinion)  Therefore, they get the nickname Smellybelly watersnake.

I've found this species in the following counties:

Union Co. IL
Alexander Co. IL
Wayne Co. IL
Stoddard Co. IL
